Cherry Orchard Football Club lost a good friend on Wednesday last with the passing of legendary sports broadcaster Jimmy Magee. Jimmy’s association with the club began in 1971, when he agreed to allow his son Paul to join the outstanding Orchard team managed by Gerry Flynn and John Wilkes. Jimmy was a regular visitor to The Lawn and other venues over the next few years and he will have seen Paul score lots of goals in a very attractive and successful side. Paul went on to play for Shamrock Rovers and Finn Harps in the League of Ireland and he sadly died in 2008 aged 51.
Jimmy maintained contact with John Wilkes for many years and in his Sunday World newspaper column in the summer of 1986 he wrote about bumping into John and his son Tony at the World Cup finals in Mexico. And later that year he penned a lovely piece, entitled Remembering Cherry Orchard, for the club’s publication to celebrate the FAI Junior Cup successes in 1982, 1985 and 1986.
Countless tributes have been paid to Jimmy Magee in recent days and, invariably, people refer to the fact that he was a lovely man.
He most certainly was and he will be missed.
May he rest in peace.
